Mechanical knowledge, but not manipulation knowledge, might support action prediction

چکیده

Bach et al. (2014) proposed a novel model of action understanding, the affordancematching hypothesis, to explain how people both interpret and predict actions of others. This model is based on two types of information. The first is function knowledge and is supposed to inform people about the goals that can be achieved with tools. The second is manipulation knowledge and is thought to provide information about the motor behaviors required to achieve these goals. In their model, function knowledge and manipulation support action interpretation and action prediction, respectively. Here, I mainly discuss the idea that manipulation knowledge might be central to action prediction. The distinction made by Bach et al. (2014) between function knowledge and manipulation knowledge is inspired to some extent from a part of the literature on apraxia (e.g., Buxbaum and Saffran, 2002; van Elk et al., 2014). In their model, function knowledge is viewed as storing information about the goals of tools, namely, their usual function1. For instance, as they

A Proper Ontology for Reasoning about Knowledge and Planning

Research on the knowledge preconditions problems for actions and plans has sought to answer the following questions: (1) When does an agent know enough to perform an action? (2) When can an agent execute a multi-agent plan? It has been assumed that the choice of temporal ontology is not crucial. This paper shows that this assumption is wrong and that it is very diicult to develop within existin...

The role of observers' gaze behaviour when watching object manipulation tasks: predicting and evaluating the consequences of action.

When watching an actor manipulate objects, observers, like the actor, naturally direct their gaze to each object as the hand approaches and typically maintain gaze on the object until the hand departs. Here, we probed the function of observers' eye movements, focusing on two possibilities: (i) that observers' gaze behaviour arises from processes involved in the prediction of the target object o...

The development and evolution of any system–person, organization–nation depends on how the system succeeds to bridge the gap between what the system knows and what the system does (with the knowledge). We call this the gap between knowing and doing or the knowing-doing gap. If the system does not do what it knows, it will lose out in competition with other systems, its relative performance in...

Relationship between Object-Related Gestures and the Fractionated Object Knowledge System

The praxic semantic system comprises a conceptual knowledge system, which stores functional information about objects, and an action knowledge system, which stores information about the correct manipulation of objects. Moreover, mechanical problem solving abilities permit to take advantages from objects structure to use unfamiliar tools or discover alternative ways of using familiar tools. This...
